This is a thrilling performance; everyone was having a good night. Among other things, I love how Varnay adds a shocked squawk as Jokanaan's head emerges from the cistern. The sound is very good (albeit transferred from records as it was on the Melodram release of this performance). As Paul Nachman pointed out in one of the other reviews here, this is from Munich (Munchen), not Monaco, the Italian translation of Munich. If you love Salome, don't miss this!

As far as I know is this recording the document of Leonie Rysanek‘s debut as Salome. A performance of the Munich Opera Festival 1971 under the baton of Karl Böhm. Rysanek is absolutely amazing! Varnay and Stolze a brilliant couple and Fischer-Dieskau very impressive as the Prophet. The rest of the cast is built from members of the famous Munich ensemble. The sound is very good.

I must correct: the conductor of this highly praised performance was not Karl Böhm, but Ferdinand Leitner!

attended that performance as student and am pleased to be able to listen to it again.Never witnessed a omparable Salome performance afterwards.Rysanek in top conditiion,Varnay superb and on top Dieskau and Solze!!!The audience went absolutely mad!!!
