I love this opera that I saw in Paris once with Montserrat Caballe , Kathleen Battle... a version that i would be so happy you have in your list.This version directed by Böhm is wonderful !!!!!He is an ideal conductor for Richard Strauss !!!He is surrounded with a wonderful distribution !!!!Thank you for this version.Bu please, find the one of Paris that I saw.....

It doesn't get any better than Karl Boehm conducting Leonie Rysanek in Ariadne, and with James King as Bacchus and Tatiana Troyanos as the Composer - wow! I prefer a Slavic voice as Zerbinetta (Edita Gruberova in several recordings) , but the New York-born Scovotti sang this at the MET when I was a kid, and she is brilliant, just missing the top note at the end of her big aria. The sound from the Opera Depot is 1967 FM radio quality, so not as good as Rysanek's 1960s recording with Leinsdorf on RCA, but the cast are wonderful and the voices shine through.

The cast for this performance of Ariadne is about as good as you can get. Rysanek was in very good voice, able to plumb the depths of Ariadne's despair and then soar to the heights of her ecstasy. King sounds like the god he was portraying, matching Rysanek note for note in the finale. Troyanos sings the composer with almost casual ease, providing a glorious climax in her salute to music. Scovotti (who may have been subbing for Reri Grist) is a delightful Zerbinetta with her very distinctive, fluent sound. The three nymphs are superbly sung by the likes of Arleen Auger, Margarita Lilowa, and Gerda Scheyrer, one of the best trios I've heard in this music. The entire cast is a who's who of fine talent at the Vienna State Opera. Bohm conducts as if Strauss was whispering in his ear (maybe he was!).The sound is excellent, making this a true bargain. Strauss fans should definitely snap this up!

Rysanek’s opalescent voice is to my mind the ideal. King is astounding, singing tirelessly with laser precision and beauty. Scovotti’s fuller mid-range is an asset, and her Cs, Ds, Es are all in place. Troyanos’ singular mezzo coupled with soprano ease is delicious. Arleen Auger, Gerda Sheyrer, Margarita Lilowa are a dream team. Erich Kunz, whose timbre is reminiscent of Fischer-Dieskau, leads a terrific buffo troupe. Bohm keeps the Prologue light and fleet, broadening tempi for the Opera. He takes great care to differentiate the “buffo” vignettes from the “seria”. In the final duet, Rysanek, King, Bohm are a triumvirate to scale Everest!

A superb recording with Rysanek in one of her best roles and an incomparable James King. The rest of the cast cannot be faulted Troyanos is wonderful as is Schoeffler..Scovotti is a charm. The masterful Bohm conducts.
