By the 70s the Bel Canto revolution had made its way over the Atlantic to U.S. shores. This recording of I Capuleti ed i Montecchi serves up Bel Canto American-style in a way that would rival anything from the old world. Beverly Sills is often praised for her lightning fast coloratura, but here she displays the remarkable control she had over spinning long bel canto lines. More than just an impressive vocal feat, the expansive quality she brings to Bellini’s melodies puts on display her supreme artistic intellect. Tatiana Troyanos is the true revelation. Her opulent tone is equally at home in the dramatic and florid passages and throughout her seemingly endless vocal range. Sarah Caldwell leads a well-paced performance, supporting the singers throughout. The sound is generally good although the voices can at times seem a little distant.
