Wagner: Götterdämmerung - Dernesch, Esser, Franzen, Kélémen, Coster, Synek; Wallat. Köln, 1972
$16.95
Description:
By 1972, Helga Dernesch’s opulent soprano had begun its shift toward mezzo territory, her middle register acquiring a richer, darker hue compared to her earlier work with von Karajan. Yet she retains the technical finesse to meet the demands of Brünnhilde, and though some of the top notes stretch her reach, her radiant tone more than compensates. Hermin Esser takes on the title role of Siegfried with authority, his burly yet appealing sound well suited to the part. The supporting cast is strong across the board, highlighted by a delightful cameo from Liane Synek as the third Norn. The sound is excellent overall, though a few brief drop-outs—likely from reel changes—occur during orchestral passages, preserving the integrity of the scenes themselves.
