This performance of Wozzeck from Salzburg captures the finest interpreters of these roles with a touch of Viennese authenticity courtesy of the remarkable Wiener Philharmoniker under the baton of Karl Böhm. Böhm crafts the score with finesse, highlighting the many melodic parts and driving the drama to frenzied heights. Anja Silja's voice, which always had both a touch of innocence and steel to it, is ideal as Marie. You really get the sense that she could have been a good person if her desperate situation hadn't drawn her to depravity. The same could almost be said for Geraint Evans in the title role, although Evans makes it clear from his opening outburst to the captain that his wiring is a little off. Still be manages to come across as tender and gentle in his encounter with Marie in Act II in which Berg treats us to a brief glimpse at C major. Fritz Uhl is a burly and gruff Drum Major. The sound is excellent.

BONUS:
Anja Silja sings excerpts from Elektra, Mahagonny, Tannhäuser, Tristan und Isolde and Götterdämmerung
