Hers remains one of the miracle voice of all times but... Nothing here is very interesting so if all you want is to bask in the lush glow of her voice this is highly recommended. There is very little interpretive personality in her singing and I once again wonder did Leontyne Price speak any language other than English? She sees to delve much more into words in her own language and often gives what ends up being a false enthusiasm in everything else. Did she actually know what she was singing about even in the most vague way? Her recordings with Karajan are so different in this regard so I assume he and his staff must have coached her in great detail to get the sort of. at times, subtle performances she recorded with him of Tosca and Carmen. There was never such attention to detail with her stage performances that I'm aware of. Even with the scooping and diving and meaningless interpretations this is lovely.

What could be more beautiful than this vocal recital?!... Leontyne Price, "The vocal Stradivarius", in recital in Vienna (1977). A must! Highly recommended!

L. Price was 50 when this recital was captured & though her voice had lost some of its very special timbre, it was still magnificent! My reserve is therefore more for her rather generalised approach to the genre itself. Strangely, I almost find the group of, intelligently chosen, Schubert songs, the most convincing. To hear ‘Auflösung’ or ‘Die Allmacht’ sung with such abandon (& quite good German) where often the great Lieder-singers struggle, is a treat. The repertoire is what is to be expected by a great Diva, verging towards the "Best of…” especially in the second half. However, the audience was very audibly enraptured by everything they got & this, the applause after every single number, is my other caveat with this interesting recording!

Leontyne Price gave a series of recitals in Salzburg, most of which are available on YouTube now. She always programmed well, beginning with a Baroque or Classical aria or two before branching out into songs by Schubert, Strauss, Duparc, or more contemporary composers. Here she finishes with two spirituals before granting the audience six encores made up of her hit arias and finally concluding with another spiritual. The audience adores her and so will you. Price's voice is head-spinningly beautiful throughout. David Garvey is a fine accompanist and the sound is excellent.

Leontyne Price had one of the great soprano voices of the century: opulent, powerful, individually beautiful with its unique smokey sound. She had the added advantage of being a stately and attractive presence on stage. 1977 is a little late in her career, but here there are few indications of that.The recital is generous and varied. The Schubert and Strauss songs go extremely well, dramatically responsive outpourings, the traditional songs find her comfortably slotting into the idiom. It is only in the two Puccini items where she is directly competing with her younger self does she come off second best. He Tosca aria is a little rushed and premptory, with phrases not given full value. The audience however is very enthusiastic about everything, as they should be.The sound as to be expected in this controlled concert environment at Saltzburg is good. The voice recorded faithfully without a trace of distortion. The piano accompaniment I found a little intrusive to begin with, an impression which faded as I got lost in the magic of leontyne Price.
