Verdi: Macbeth (In English) - Drake, G. Jones, Thomas, Gwynne, Williams; Wetherell. Wales, 1965

In 1965 Gwyneth Jones was already two years into her international career. She would go on to garner many devoted fans (myself included) and also many detractors who would fault her sometimes erratic performances. I would recommend this recording to both the former and the latter. She is declamatory and dramatic in "Vieni t'affretta" and then manages to pull it back for the sleep walking scene in which she sings the D flat pianissimo. I would also recommend this recording for lovers of this opera. Hearing it in English lends a Shakespearean quality to the proceedings and an immediacy to the text.
