Verdi: Macbeth - Taddei, Gencer, Picchi, Mazzoli; Gui. Palermo, 1960

Listen to a Sample:

It seems like a no-brainer that the sixties should have enjoyed a revival of interest in Macbeth.  There were so many great Verdi singers who could execute the demands of the roles.  Here is no exception.   Macbeth needs a voice with both suavity and grit.  Giuseppe Taddei brings both to the table.  He actually makes this character relatively sympathetic (no easy task.)  Leyla Gencer is an ideal lady Macbeth.  Her voice is seamless, large and able to negotiate the octave leaps and scales very well.  She is also not afraid to put a little acid in her voice when the character demands it (unlike some other sopranos this is a choice.)   The sound is very good.
