Pros:

  • A very impressive cast was assembled for this Ring Cycle.
  • Ingrid Bjoner, who was a house soprano at the Bavarian State Opera for many years, delivers stunning porformances of Brünnhilde, bringing powerful tones with a youthful sheen.
  • Jean Cox conveys movie-star charisma as Siegfried. If his tone is slightly monochromatic, he still manages to maintain the lyrircism of his voice no matter the vocal demands placed upon him.
  • Leif Roar's gorgeous baritone is well cast as the Rheingold Wotan, and veteran Theo Adam puts his many years of experience in these operas to good use as the Walküre Wotan and the Wanderer in Siegfried.
  • A young Peter Hofmann offers one of the most beautifully sung Loges I have ever heard.
  • Leonie Rysanek and James King had a special chemistry as Siegmund and Sieglinde and this performance is no exception.
  • The rest of the cast offers an embarassment of riches including, Brigitte Fassbaender as Fricka, Franz Crass as Fasolt, Zoltan Kélémen as Alberich, Kurt Moll as Hunding, and Astrid Varnay as the first Norn.

Cons:

  • None to mention.
