Richard Strauss famously envisioned his ideal Salome as "a 16-year-old princess with the voice of Isolde." This vision is nearly realized in Anja Silja, who embodies youthful purity while summoning the vocal power necessary to surmount the opera's immense orchestration. Gerhard Stolze's portrayal of Herod is grotesque, enhancing the opera's sense of horror. Eberhard Wächter brings stoic virility to Jochanaan, and Fritz Wunderlich nearly steals the show in his brief appearance as Narraboth.
