Eugene Onegin
This performance of Eugene Onegin captures a remarkable ensemble on the cusp of international acclaim. Bernd Weikl imbues the title role with a brash nobility, striking a compelling equilibrium between Onegin’s youthful arrogance and his underlying humanity. In the role of Tatiana, a young Eva Marton proves an ideal match, her tone pure yet edged with the steely brilliance that would later define her Brünnhildes and Turandots. Peter Schreier brings his characteristic musical intelligence and unfailing technique to Lensky, delivering a portrayal marked by both lyrical sensitivity and romantic ardor.
The performance includes some compelling cameos from seasoned Vienna State Opera veterans including the Filipjewna of Hilde Konetzni and Anton Dermota’s charming Triquet.

This production had an uhnlucky start, as direcot, conductor ans soprano withdrew before the opening night. ALthough, the reimplacements weren't bad. The orchestra plays beautifully an you get accusatoment to the German translation (but you will not feel in love with it). The cast shows some singers at the beinning, some at the peak, some at the end of their careers: a very young and not to dramatic Marton as Tatjana and Weikl as an elegant Onegin are just starting their career. The reliable Jahn and die prnce of castly lyricism Schreier in their best years and the cameos of the wonderful Dermota and the touching Hilde Konetzni as greetings form the 40s and 50s. The sound is excellent.
