Turandot
Giacomo Puccini (1858–1924)
DESCRIPTION
Given that Newark's population in 1974 was only 400,000, it's remarkable that the community could sustain a production of such scale and quality. Not only did they secure several legendary singers, but they also assembled an orchestra and chorus that, while not at the level of the world’s major houses, performed with more cohesion and polish than one might expect from a regional company.
Birgit Nilsson, approaching the end of her long reign as the leading Turandot of her generation, no longer offers the youthful gleam heard in earlier years, but she more than compensates with the sheer power of her voice. A young Plácido Domingo brings assurance and vocal clarity to Calaf, his interpretation marked by youthful energy and technical ease. As Liù, Licia Albanese, also in the final phase of her career, may not always summon the control of her prime, yet the core of her artistry still shines through.
