It has always surprised me how convincing Franco Bonisolli was in French repertoire. There always seemed something rather incongruous about this larger than life Italian in the delicate French style. As Faust, he reveals his innate sense for French style, while highlighting the fact that Gounod's music has all the drama and intensity of any Italian opera. Jeanette Pilou is perfect as Marguerite. Her voice has that ideal blend of innocence and dramatic intensity that makes for a credible wide-eyed girl in Act II and a righteous martyr at the end of the opera. Bonaldo Giaiotti's bass is impressive if not particularly memorable as Méphistophélès. Kostas Paskalis's suave baritone is pure gold as Valentin. The sound is good

BONUS:
Jeanette Pilou and Franco Bonisolli sing the love duet from Madama Butterfly.
