Aida
This performance of Aida reminds the listener why Renata Tebaldi commands such enduring admiration. The voice is produced with notable steadiness, breadth, and free from strain. However, rather than relying on sheer tonal opulence, she shapes her phrases with care, attentive to Verdi’s dynamic markings as well as her own keen instincts.
Rita Gorr offers a compelling Amneris, combining vocal amplitude with dramatic acuity. Her portrayal balances seduction and emotional instability, and her high notes are as secure as Tebaldi's. The male principals, by comparison, are serviceable but not as distinguished.

Excellent and frustrating
This performance was at once excellent and frustrating: excellent in terms of the sheer dramatic passion and intensity, frustrating in that it's only excerpts. Renata Tebaldi sings with far more commitment and drive than she did on her two studio recordings of "Aïda." Rita Gorr is a capable Amneris and brings just the right amount of imperious skill. Dimiter Uzunov is not at the level of the women, but he's a nice enough tenor (I've certainly heard worse – can you say "Mario Del Monaco"?) and I'd really like to have heard him and Tebaldi in the Tomb Scene. Georges Sébastian was a majorly underrated conductor who's at the top of his form here. If this "Aïda" existed complete it would be a performance for the ages.
