Helga Dernesch's auburn-hued soprano is well-suited to the role of Elisabeth, and although her stamina begins to flag slightly during the Act III prayer, she delivers a deeply committed performance throughout. A young Matti Salminen also makes a strong impression as the Landgraf, his bass already showing the authority and presence that would come to define his career.
