Wagner: Tannhäuser (In English) - Aitken, Pierce, Collier, Lawrence, Clarkson; Robertson. London, 1960

This English language performance of Tannhäuser displays the wealth of great singers that graced the London stages in the 1960s. The most notable singer in the cast is the Venus of Marie Collier. Collier's slender soprano makes for a sexy goddess at the beginning of Act I then turning on a dime to become spurned lover. William Aitken brings needed lyricism to the role of Tannhäuser and Judith Pierce creates a winsome and sympathetic Elisabeth. The sound is only fair.
