I had no idea what to expect when I found this recording, except that no matter how the work turned out to be, at least I would be treated to some fine singing. I was pleasantly surprised by how enjoyable this opera is. Benjamin's musical palate may not be the most advanced but he shows that he knows how to create a well-paced drama with some exciting numbers and tuneful melodies. The cast, as I alluded to earlier, is first rate. Amy Shuard is particularly effective as Madame Defarge as is Heather Harper as Lucie Mannette and Alexander Young as Charles Darnay. I would say this opera is due for a revival and anybody who enjoys the novel will appreciate this music drama. The sound is good.
