The great Cesare Siepi singing Grunemanz, something new to me and surprisingly convincing. The same applies to the conductor, who was all but a regular in Vienna and makes an excellent job. Grace Hoffmann, although announced to be indisposed, ist breathtaking as Kundry and Kollo, in best shape, gives a youthful Parsifal.The rest is okay.

This is an excellent performance of Parsifal, probably recorded by someone in a seat in the middle stalls. The voices are slightly recessed, but not so much that they get drowned out by the orchestra (most of the time). Those who want only broadcast-miked performances might not be pleased.Kollo is heard here at his freshest, the voice flowing and beautiful without any of the forced tone that would invade his voice within only a few years. Siepi sings majestically, with a strong command of the German text. Kerns surprised me; I always thought him a solid, if unremarkable singer, but here he gives us an Amfortas with all the pain and vocal beauty would could want. Pernerstorfer still makes a feisty, embittered Klingsor. At the beginning of the second act an announcement is made from the stage that Hoffman is suddenly indisposed and asking for the audience's indulgence. You would never know it. She sings splendidly, her voice warm and steady, the high Bs thrilling. I'm glad her portrayal was captured for posterity. The Flowermaidens are lovely (look at those names!), but they often double each other when Wagner directs they should sing solo. Similarly, the first full statement of "Durch Mitleid Wissen" in the first act is sung by offstage voices - go figure. Vanderzand conducts a lyrical, passionate performance that he paces well. I never felt bored as I sometimes did when Levine conducted this opera at the Met.For fans of the singers and the opera.

C'est un enregistrement historique car il nous permet d'entendre Siepi dans Wagner. Siepi que j'aime beaucoup et qui, ici, est une très bonne surprise. Merci pour ce Parsifal.

I just received the “Parsifal” set. The technical quality and excessive noise (coughing) from the audience is quite disappointing. Although I am a great Siepi “fan”, the background noise makes it hard to enjoy, and at times even hear, the wonderful voices. I believe the technical shortcomings should at least be mentioned
