Wagner: Die Walküre - Kniplova, Berry, Janowitz, Parly, Ludwig, Talvela; Karajan. Salzburg, 1967
$14.95
Description:
This performance is particularly notable for featuring Walter Berry in a rare turn as Wotan. Whether he accepted the role out of deference to Herbert von Karajan or genuine artistic curiosity, the result is compelling. His Wotan has a youthful vitality and vocal freshness that make one regret he did not return to the part more often. Nadézda Kniplova may project a slightly matronly presence as Brünnhilde, but her voice withstands the punishing demands of Wagner’s writing, especially with Karajan driving the orchestra to its limits. Gundula Janowitz walks a fine line as Sieglinde—pushed close to the edge of her vocal resources, but never overstepping. Christa Ludwig, cast as Fricka, plays the onstage wife of her real-life husband, and with her commanding mezzo, it’s no surprise she wins the argument.
