I defy anyone to listen to this recording of Das Rheingold and provide me with a reason why Ferdinand Frantz should not be regarded as one of the finest Wotan's of the 20th Century. His voice has a youthful, yet commanding quality, completely devoid of the "Bayreuth bark" and does not flag during the entire course of the evening. He is joined by a remarkable supporting cast including Wolfgang Windgassen showing his nimbler side as Loge, Res Fisher as Fricka, a fantastic pair of giants in the form of Gottlob Frick and Josef Greindl and even Rudolf Schock as Froh. The sound is very good.
