Verdi: Simon Boccanegra (Original Version) - Bruscantini, Ligi, Turp, Howell; Matheson. London, 1975

Lovers of this opera will appreciate this recording.  It is a rare performance of the original 1857 version of Simon Boccanegra.   By 1881 when Verdi revised this opera his musical style had changed substantially.   Even though the tonal language might be a little simpler here, Verdi's signature ability to paint characters is ever present.  Sesto Bruscantini is larger-than-life as the title character.  The sound is very good.
