Description:
It’s often said that to stage Il Trovatore successfully, all you need is four of the greatest singers in the world. This performance suggests that, in a pinch, three will suffice. Baritone Ladislaus Konya, though competent, is somewhat overshadowed by his more illustrious colleagues. Still, the overall performance is so strong that his presence never detracts from the drama.
Carlo Cossutta proves to be a rare Manrico—one equally comfortable with tender lyricism and heroic declamation. His “Ah sì, ben mio” is particularly moving, balancing vocal power with emotional depth. Fiorenza Cossotto is in ferocious form as Azucena, delivering a bone-chilling performance even by her own formidable standards. Martina Arroyo brings her signature warmth and richness to Leonora, spinning out long, arching lines with ease and expressive beauty.
Charles Mackerras leads the performance with authority and nuance, drawing both fire and finesse from the orchestra. The sound is excellent.
