Falstaff
This performance, sung in Swedish, demonstrates that Verdi—and by extension, Shakespeare—can effortlessly transcend language barriers. In fact, performing in their native tongue seems to allow the singers greater freedom to infuse the opera with the vitality and exuberance it demands.
Ingvar Wixell delivers an excellent portrayal of the old knight, though his voice carries a slightly more youthful tone than one might typically expect for the role. Elisabeth Söderström is equally delightful, bringing charm and wit to Alice.

superb FALSTAFF
never mind being in Swedish, this performance is just that - a performance! Singing and conducting are all superb. Highly recommended.

Delightful Falstaff in Swedish!
Verdi lovers and those who love Falstaff in particular must get this set. Yes, it's in Swedish, but it goes well in that language. All the singers are fully invested in the proceedings because they know what they're singing about all the time. I would rather hear this in excellent Swedish than mediocre Italian.Wixell makes a roguish Falstaff. He's funny and sly (or thinks he is) and sings extremely well. Soderstrom was quite young when this was recorded, but nevertheless makes a terrific Alice Ford. She leads the ensembles with aplomb, her voice shining on the top line throughout. She also has a genuine trill. Her daughter is sung beautifully by Busk Margit Jonnson, a singer I'd never heard before now. Tord Slaettegard is a handsome Fenton with an especially lovely aria in the last scene. Saeden offers a splenetic, richly sung Ford and Barbro Ericson (who just recently passed away) is a memorable Quickly. The wonderful bass Arne Tyren is heard as Pistola. Michael Gielen conducts a spirited performance. The sound is very good with no glitches that I heard. Highly recommended!
