Verdi: Falstaff

Glossop, Marton, Domínguez, Vanzo, Massard; Sebastian

Paris, 1974

$9.95

Description:

Peter Glossop brings both his commanding Verdi baritone and theatrical flair to a performance of Falstaff that bridges the demands of music and Shakespearean drama. Éva Marton, early in her career, finds a rare spark in the role of Alice Ford, making a strong impression in a part that often gets overshadowed. Oralia Dominguez is completely at ease as Mistress Quickly, her formidable mezzo giving the role its proper weight and wit. The only misstep is Alain Vanzo, whose fine tenor voice is ultimately too light for Fenton. Still, the overall cast and energy of this performance make it well worth a listen.
