Opera Depot scores a hit with this broadcast performance from Munich 1977. Varady was an up-and-comer at the time and she shows why here. Her voice is very beautiful with an especially lovely top range (her final high B is thrilling.) More importantly, she conveys all of Tatiana's excitement, heartbreak, and determination. She is complemented by Brendel's arrogant, sexy Onegin, another singer with a fine voice. Their final scene is passionate as well as heartbreaking. Moll sings Gremin's big aria like a cello; I've rarely heard it sung better. Ahnjoe's Lenski reveals some talents that have not been as apparent before in other recordings. The voice is a slender one with not a lot of individual color, yet he makes it work and sings his aria with skill. The rest of the cast is made up of Munich regulars who are all first-rate. Hoffgen was mostly known for her Bayreuth Erdas; it's good to hear her in another role. Fehenberger can still sing well. He sings Triquet's solo in French. Aronovich leads a spirited performance though some tempos sound slow. The audience loves the cast, but something on stage disturbs some members at the opening of Act Three and there are some boos.The sound is beautiful broadcast stereo with no glitches I heard. All Onegin fans should get this. So it's in German; you've heard it in Russian many times already!
