Although ultimately Ursula Schröder-Feinen's voice could not stand up to the demands of the dramatic soprano repertoire, her early years bore out some astonishing performances. The freshness and power of her voice are well preserved in this excellent Salome. Her voice is gleaming and there is a childlike quality to her sound which brought to my mind Ljuba Welitsch in her prime. The supporting cast is quite good and includes Astrid Varnay as a scenery chewing Herodias, Leif Roar as a stoic Jochanaan and Jaroslav Kachel who finds an excellent balance between the comic and tragic as Herod. The sound is good.
