Salome
If you do not know the artistry of Maria Cebotari, prepare yourself for a revelation. She is without doubt one of the greatest Salomes in the history of opera. Her voice is both alluring and powerful, and she navigates the treacherous role with effortless abandon. It is beyond tragic that she died at the age of 39—just imagine the Elektra, Isolde, and Brünnhilde that could have been. Although Elisabeth Höngen was indisposed during this performance, she still took part by speaking her lines over the music, preserving the dramatic continuity of the role.

Terrific Performance in Listenable Sound!
We are lucky to have this performance, performed by the visiting Vienna State Opera in London in 1947. Maria Cebotari only lived another two years, dying from cancer in 1949. She is one of the two greatest Salomes of her generation (the other being Ljuba Welitsch.) Her top notes soar to the heavens while her middle voice is seductive and lovely. There is nothing in the part she can't handle vocally and she amply shows why all the men in the palace are besotted with her: a classic portrayal. Patzak gives the other classic portrayal here, really singing Herod without resorting to the tiresome sprechstimme usually heard in the role. Höngen was still singing very well in 1947 (listen to her Klytemnestra under Beecham from the same year), but she was indisposed and no understudy was available. Rather than cancel the performance, Höngen speaks the role. What is amazing is how little it matters. The great German mezzo still makes quite an impression even if she doesn't sing a note. Rothmüller is a fiery Jokanaan. The supporting singers are all wonderful too (I'm not sure if that's Ludwig Weber as the First Nazarene though.) Krauss heats everything up to near boiling, his conducting sensuous and well-paced.The sound is quite good. There is some pitch wavering in the orchestra before the Jokanaan-Salome scene, but that has been true of every version of this recording I've heard.All Salome lovers should snap this up!
