Elektra

This performance of Elektra captures Ursula Schröder-Feinen in her all-too-brief vocal prime, delivering the title role with intensity and brilliance. Leonie Rysanek, as Chrysothemis, makes a grand impression—her singing and stage presence are nothing short of larger-than-life, infusing each scene with vivid personality. In contrast, Astrid Varnay brings a more nuanced portrayal to Klytämnestra, shaping a character who evokes both revulsion and sympathy through subtle, expressive detail. Karl Böhm leads the orchestra with rhythmic precision, yet manages to preserve the score's raw, elemental power.

Fine Performance, Very Recessed Sound!

I have a high tolerance for in-house recordings, but this one was too much of a challenge even for me. The voices are very distant and listening became a chore after 20 minutes or so. And that's a real pity since the entire cast is terrific. At least the recording is pitched correctly and there aren't any bumps or thumps. But all three ladies can be heard in far better sound in a later performance from Munich (1977 - OD 11617). That is a incendiary performance and is highly recommended.

Strauss: Elektra - Schröder-Feinen, Rysanek, Varnay

Schade.
