Astrid Varnay had one of the most fascinating and long careers of any singer of the twentieth century. After her Met debut as Sieglinde at the tender age of 23 opposite Melchoir and Traubel, she went on to dominate the great Wagnerian soprano roles, participating in the first post-war seasons at Bayreuth, making history with the likes of Hans Knappertsbusch, Herbert von Karajan and Wieland Wagner. When the soprano roles proved out of her reach she switched to mezzo parts and enjoyed a second chapter of her career, distinguishing herself with her dramatic commitment in roles like Klytämnestra and Herodias. She would continue performing until 1995. Varnay's artistry was complete. In her prime she had a voice of endless power and opulence and she was a riveting actress. I am proud to present this compilation featuring Varnay in some of her greatest roles and a few rarities that you may not have known existed incuding arias and excerpts from Macbeth, Il Trovatore, Hänsel und Gretel, Elektra, Tristan, Parsifal and The Ring
