Elektra
Pauline Tinsley would have owned the role of Elektra if she had been singing it today. Fortunately, this recording preserves her unique brand of brilliance that combined a fiery temperament, a voice of limitless power, and a deep connection to every word that was uttered from her lips. Anny Schlemm is excellent as Klytämnestra, matching Tinsley in intensity and playing off of her well dramatically. There is a fair amount of rustling of the microphone throughout the opera, but it doesn't detract too much from the impact of this gripping performance.

Fine Performance With a Few Caveats!
Pauline Tinsley was a tremendous singing actress with a voice that could sing just about anything without strain or wobble. She took on Elektra later in her career and the wait was worth it. Nothing in Strauss' music fazes her and she sings it all beautifully while creating a vivid portrait of this tortured, obsessed woman. That being said she is heard to much better effect in an earlier performance from Wales where she sings in English (OD #11667), mostly because the sound is so much better.June Card, an American soprano who made most of career in Germany, is a lovely Chrysothemis. Anny Schlemm was another singer who could sing just about anything and did; by this point in her career (I'm guessing this performance dates from the early 80's) her voice could be a bit wobbly, yet she had excellent diction and knew Klytemnestra very well. The rest of the cast is very good. Klauspeter Seibel conducts a strong performance.The big caveat here is the murky sound with its recessed voices and an almost constant crackling of the mic in the background. It almost becomes unacceptable when just as Klytemnestra is heard to scream offstage, the tapist juggles the mic and we almost miss her screams. In addition, there is some music missing after Klytemnestra leaves the stage and Chrysothemis comes in to tell Elektra the news of Orest's death (possibly the tape had to be turned over).For fans of the singers.
