Description:

Though the sound quality is far from ideal—enough to give pause about releasing it—this performance of Parsifal offers such a compelling cast that it ultimately proves too important to ignore. Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau delivers a rare and riveting portrayal of Amfortas, marked by poetic phrasing and emotional intensity, and he more than holds his own against Wagner’s powerful orchestration. Hans Hopf, though late in his career, sings Parsifal with clarity and conviction. Hildegard Hillebrecht offers a distinctive Kundry, her pure tone and lyrical line lending the character an unusual softness even in her most intense moments. Kurt Moll is a magnificent Gurnemanz, delivering some of the most beautifully sung passages you’ll find in this role. Despite its technical shortcomings, this performance reveals a sterling interpretation that deserves to be heard.
