conductor, all soloists in one of the best recordings of Frosch.Resnik and Hillebrecht stands out as one of the best in respective roles.Warmly recommended

This Frau is not as well-known as it probably should be. Solti makes few cuts. There is some trimming in the Third Act, but not much. The soloists are terrific. Hillebrecht doesn't possess Rysanek's force-of-nature voice or personality, but she's an excellent singer. She and Borkh tire a bit before the final top C of the quartet. They make it though and Borkh lives up to her reputation as a great singing actress. Resnik is terrific as the Nurse. Her voice isn't always steady, but she still had a good B-flat for the end of Act Two and she makes her role more three-dimensional than it usually appears. James King is tireless as the Emperor. He makes more music out of the role than perhaps even Strauss imagined. McIntyre is a warmly human Barak. All the supporting roles are well sung by Covent Garden's stable of fine comprimarios.The sound is mostly very good. If you love Frau as I do you must hear this performance!

Excellent. Was thinking of attending when it was first announced. I'm a huge Resnik fan and she doesn't disappoint. Add King and Borkh at the top of their game under Solti and you get one truly memorable Frau. I'd have wanted the sound to be as memorable but it more than puts the excitement across

As a young regular opera goer this Frau was aseminal experience. Solti was well establishedat the Garden, but this was his finest hour...thefire brand Hungarian conducting an unknownStrauss epic.The house was crackling withexcitement, as the orchestra and cast gave theperformance of their lives.I came out reeling ,and decided to embark on a singing career,inspired by Donald MccIntyres magnificentBarak. How good to have this record.

Not bad, not as good as the later performances a few years later.

Thanks to Opera depot once again for releasing once again a performance from my early opera going days.This was my very first exposure to Frosch and I recall being literally shaken to my very core in my seat high over Solti’s ecstatic orchestra, especially when he slipped the leash in the interludes.My stand-out memories are Resnik and Borkh who to my schoolboy eyes was very glamorous, and for once was not the shrewish strident termagant that Frau Barak can easily become.What are missing of course from a recording are Svoboda’s ever changing fantastic sets.

This was one of the great nights at the ROH. Solti was on fire because he believed in this piece.Resnik for me was stunning in this role. This is just as wonderful as the Met casts at the time. Solti brought the singers at the house into another dimension. For me McIntyre was just too gruff and the voice was never that steady in any role he sang but he was a good actor and carried it off. Berry with Solti again at the Garden was superb but that was Berry’s best role. Resnik in whatever she did was always wonderful to watch and the voice certainly became the role she was singing, for me the supreme singing actress of her time.
