This performance stands as one of the strongest cases for opera in English that I have encountered. Der Rosenkavalier is inherently conversational, and hearing it in English brings out the brilliance and wit of Hugo von Hofmannsthal's libretto, transforming the experience into something closer to enjoying a well-crafted play.

Janet Baker is exceptional in the title role, delivering both lush tonal quality and graceful poise. Elizabeth Harwood shines as a delightful Sophie. The real revelation, though, is the Marschallin portrayed by Helga Dernesch. Not only does she sing the role beautifully, but her English diction is remarkably clear, and her delivery feels so natural that you might almost believe you were listening to a native speaker. The sound quality is excellent.
