You can’t get much more Viennese than a performance of Arabella at the Wiener Staatsoper with Gundula Janowitz and Eberhard Wächter. Janowitz embodies all of the character’s understated charm without letting her come across as cold or aloof. Wächter’s Mandryka has the perfect mix of rustic charm and guileless sincerity. Lucia Popp is a bubbly Zdenka, and Edita Gruberova makes much of the Fiakermilli’s brief but memorable entrance.
