Roussel: Padmavati - Bouvier, Massard, Jobin, Destain; Scaglia. Rome, 1957

Listen to a Sample:

Another curious gem from the 1920s… This opera was inspired by Albert Roussel's travels to India, and unlike other composers who merely tried to mimic the flavor of India, Roussel actually studied their music closely. The result is a score with much spicier harmonies and an overall musical world that seems vivid and unique. The cast of veteran French singers is quite good particularly Robert Massard as Allaouddin. The sound is good.
