Berlioz: Benvenuto Cellini - Gedda, Vaughan, Minton, Ward; Pritchard. London, 1966

Listen to a Sample:

Since its premiere, Benvenuto Cellini has not had an easy time. The musicians complained that the technical demands of the score were unplayable and the perplexed audience was so taken aback that riots broke out. To mitigate the challenges and dramatic weaknesses of the libretto a first rate singer in the title role is absolutely crucial, and Nicolai Gedda proves just that. He manages the many technical challenges with aplomb. He is supported by a wonderful cast that includes the likes of David Ward, Robert Massard, Yvonne Minton and Elizabeth Vaughan. The sound is excellent.
