Rossini: Mosè - Ghiaurov, Zylis-Gara, Verrett, Lane, Petri, Garaventa; Sawallisch. Roma, 1968
$9.95
Description:
In the same year that Wolfgang Sawallisch conducted a complete Ring Cycle for RAI in Rome, he also turned his attention to Rossini's Mosè, an unusual but compelling pairing. Sawallisch clearly has something to say about this neglected work, shaping a persuasive argument for its revival with both stylistic finesse and dramatic purpose.
He is supported by an excellent cast led by Nicolai Ghiaurov, whose imposing bass delivers both biblical weight and refined nuance in the title role. Teresa Zylis-Gara, though underused as Anaide, offers a breathtaking opening aria, reminding us how bel canto can flourish even in more dramatic voices. Shirley Verrett makes the most of her big scene as Sinaide, bringing her trademark passion and vocal richness to every phrase. If anything, both Zylis-Gara and Verrett leave you wishing Rossini had given them more to sing.
