Elisabeth Grümmer approaches perfection as the Marschallin. She was already in her mid-50s at the time of this performance, but vocally she is as fresh as ever. Couple that vocal freshness with her years of experience (both as a singer and human being) and you have a near ideal Marschallin.
As Sophie, Ruth-Margaret Pütz is a fascinating counterpart to Grümmer. She has the youthful quality needed to convey the teen-aged Sophie, but there is a luscious bloom to her voice that almost gives you the impression that Sophie is just a younger version of the Marschallin.
Otto Edelmann has all the provinsional charm (I mean that only in a good way) that makes for an excellent Ochs.
