Der Rosenkavalier
Elisabeth Grümmer approaches perfection as the Marschallin. She was already in her mid-50s at the time of this performance, but vocally she is as fresh as ever. Couple that vocal freshness with her years of experience—both as a singer and as a human being—and you have a near ideal Marschallin.
As Sophie, Ruth-Margaret Pütz offers a fascinating counterpart to Grümmer. She has the youthful quality needed to convey the teen-aged Sophie, but there is a luscious bloom to her voice that almost gives the impression that Sophie is just a younger version of the Marschallin. Otto Edelmann rounds out the cast with all the provincial charm (meant only in the best way) that makes for an excellent Ochs.

Elisabeth Grümmer - a great Marschallin
Can't add much to what the previous reviewer has said, which I fully agree. I bought this mainly for Elisabeth Grümmer's Marschallin, a role she never recorded commercially and she fully meets all expectations and more - a truly great, endearing portrayal completely capturing all the character's poise, dignity, wistfulness and eventual resignation to time and fate. The "skips" towards the end of Act 1 due to corruption of tape are indeed annoying but it's better to have this entire performance than nothing.

Beautiful Performance, Good Sound!
This is the third complete Rosenkavalier Opera Depot has with Elisabeth Grümmer as the Marschallin (there is also a two CD excerpts set where Grümmer is heard in Act Three.) Even if this isn't her best role, she's still Grümmer. The voice is steady and beautiful and blends well with the other two ladies.Kay Griffel began her career as a mezzo and during this period she was making the transition to soprano. She sounds very sopranoish already and sings the passionate, immature Octavian with great skill. Ruth-Margaret Pütz is a lovely Sophie, her high soprano just great for Faninal's determined daughter. Edelmann is, as always, a great Ochs. His low E at the end of Act Two is more secure here than elsewhere. The supporting singers are all very good, with an especially good Italian Singer. The Innkeeper lets out a terrific top B-flat at the Marschallin's entrance in Act Three. Too bad we're not told who the singers are.The sound, probably from an in-house source, is very listenable, the voices clear and forward. The file corruption (what Andy calls skipping) in the last ten minutes or so of Act One is very annoying, spoiling Grümmer's exquisite "silberne Rose" line, but I'd rather have this performance than not have it. Besides, Opera Depot has two other recordings with Grümmer that don't have the skipping problem so all is not lost.Recommended to Rosenkavalier aficionados!
