Teresa Zylis-Gara's voice was one of the most beautiful I've ever heard: a limpid, uncomplicated sound that caressed and soothed audience members. Her recital here is comprised of songs in four languages (German, Polish, Russian, and Czech), some of which were familiar to me (the Brahms, Strauss, and Dvorak) and some of which weren't (the Chopin and Tchaikovsky). The program does an excellent job contrasting different composers and poets with a variety of moods and colors. I found all the texts and even translations for most of the songs online. Helmut Deutsch lives up to his reputation as a first-class pianist and accompanist. I thought Zylis-Gara would announce her encores (there are three), but she doesn't. The final Rachmaninov song is worth the price of admission alone. The sound is excellent though a rustle of tape hiss is heard throughout the recital. My ear tuned it out pretty quickly.An exquisite hour of lovely singing!
