Mozart: Die Zauberflöte - M. Price, Burrows, Deutekom, Bryn-Jones, Ward, Robinson; Wisch. London, 1968

$9.95

Description:

There is a certain cynicism that can develop toward The Magic Flute, perhaps due to the frequent, half-hearted revivals staged primarily to fill seats and boost opera company revenues. That is precisely why performances like this—ones that remind us of Mozart’s genius and the opera’s enduring magic—are so vital.

This recording presents an excellent English translation (albeit one that does not gloss over the opera’s problematic elements.) The young Margaret Price is radiant as Pamina, her voice opulent and effortless. Stuart Burrows brings dignity and elegance to Tamino. Cristina Deutekom’s Queen of the Night is simply awe-inspiring—imagine the power of an Elektra-sized voice with astonishing coloratura and a thrilling high F.

David Ward delivers Sarastro’s lines with mellifluous warmth and commanding gravitas. However, the true standout of this glittering cast may be Delme Bryn-Jones. His magnificent voice, capable of rivaling the greatest baritones of any era, is well known to those familiar with his work. What is surprising, however, is his impeccable comedic timing—his delivery in the trial scene, quipping, "Do you know all these tests could put a man off birds for life!" (a witty pun on the slang for women), feels right out of Fawlty Towers or Monty Python.

With an excellent cast, superb sound quality, and a performance that proves opera in English can be both thrilling and relevant, this recording has the power to convert even the staunchest purist.
