Pros:
- If you have ever seen Joseph Losey's film version of Don Giovanni, then this cast might look familar. (The indentant at Paris Opera at the time, Rolf Liebermann, would later produce that film.)
- The most notable difference is the conductor, Charles Mackerras (as opposed to Lorin Maazel.) Mackerras was on the forefront of the period instrument revolution, whereas Maazel was firmly, and unapologetically, moored in a more romantic approach.
- Barely in her thirties, Kiri Te Kanawa nearly steals the show as Donna Elvira, bringing purity and richness of tone to the part, as well as a nuanced approach to the character.
- Ruggero Raimondi's black bass is well balanced by his affable stage presence.
- Edda Moser is a singer who never seemed to get the recognition she deserved. Her Donna Anna is near ideal, combining steely high notes, purity of tone and an exquisite knack for Mozartean style.
Cons:
- None to mention.
