Die Entführung aus dem Serail
Given the energy and spirit of this performance, you would have no idea that a devastating war was being fought in their midst. This is due in great part to the youthful Konstanze courtesy of Elisabeth Schwarzkopf. Any doubts as to how she would fare in such a daunting role are quickly put to rest from the first few bars of "Martern aller Arten." Anton Dermota is a suave Belmonte and Emmy Loose is charmingly coy as Blonde. I have included excerpts from Die Entführung aus dem Serail to fill out the second CD, featuring Teresa Stich-Randall and Nicolai Gedda.

FIRST CLASS! SUPERB!
Schwarzkopf is impeccable, vocal perfection in legato and tireless in scale. Curiously and sadly, Konstanze’s first aria, “Ach, ich liebte” is cut. Loose is charming, with earthy low tones, pealing high tones. Dermota possesses one of the sweetest, most intrinsically beautiful timbres, matched by superior musicianship. Klein is a hard put-put upon Pedrillo, but fills out the quartet attractively. Alsen’s alpine bass is a marvel. Moralt gives a seamless, atmospheric reading, alternately elegiac and energetic. Am I imagining moments foreshadowing “Fidelio”?! Sound excellent.

This is a very interesting and beautiful performance of ABDUCTION. Eliz Schwarzkopf is, as always, very intelligent and articulate, although she shrieks a little, particularly during the reunion-quartet.The big surprise hero is the Wagnerian giant Herbert Alsen. If an oak tree could sing, it would sound like him. He's rapidly becoming one of my favorite big bassos.
