Helge Rosvaenge deserves recognition for taking on the role of Canio at the age of 67—a feat even for tenors in their prime. His voice operates at full throttle, favoring power over nuance, but in this role, sheer vocal heft is arguably more essential. (Ideally, both strength and subtlety would be welcome.)
The true revelation here is Felicia Weathers as Nedda. She was still in her twenties at the time, making the onstage May-December dynamic feel all the more natural. Her voice is sumptuous, bringing effortless opulence to the role.
NOTE: The sound quality leaves much to be desired, but the performance itself crackles with energy.
