Pros:

  • In an effort to distance Gounod's version of Faust from Goethe's, German theaters took to renaming the opera "Margarethe." With Joan Sutherland in the (alternate) titular role, you can see why that makes sense beyond just national pride. Sutherland's larger-than-life vocal presence easily steals the focus throughout the evening and left me reflecting on how three dimensional Marguerite can be in the right hands. She infuses the character with warmth and strength, turning her from cliché martyr to tragic heroine all while delivering some incredible singing.

Cons:

  • None to mention.
