Joan Sutherland and Plácido Domingo make for an intriguing pair in this performance of Lucia di Lammermoor. Sutherland brings her customary opulence along with her meticulous bel canto stylings to the title role. She seems particularly galvanized by Placido Domingo as Edgardo, who delivers a red-hot performance and seems to relish the chance to display his pristine legato. Tom Krause and Kurt Moll both skew a little towards the Wagnerian side of the spectrum, but their oversized voices are put to good use in standing up to the star power of Domingo and Sutherland. The sounds has some hiss and the voices are often distant.
