Virginia Zeani is the main draw here and for good reason. She is terrific, giving a glamorous, passionate performance. She believes in the melodramatic plot and characters and brings the audience right along with her. Her top C at the end of Act Two is thrilling. The other singers are quite good, Guido Mazzini as De Sirieux in particular. The bass whose character gives evidence in the first act has a wonderfully deep voice, unfortunately he is unnamed. Aldo Bottion is mediocre, the voice unsteady and pushed, but he doesn't ruin anything. The audience loves Zeani, shouting "Brava!" whenever she finishes even a short monologue.The sound is a problem though. In an opera as conversational and swift-moving as this one, one needs to be able to hear what's going on. This was obviously recorded by someone in the audience so the voices are recessed. The ear adjusts, but those who only enjoy closely miked broadcasts will be frustrated. At least the tapist is quiet and doesn't move the mic around noisily.Zeani fans will want this, but Fedora fans may want to look elsewhere.
