It is possible that Virginia Zeani didn't enjoy the super-stardom that she deserved because the opera world just didn't know what to make of her at the time.   She was a singer that could sing almost anything and did just that.  Her voice moved with impressive agility and she had reserves of power that she would use to great effect when the moment called for it.  And as with Leyla Gencer, we must be grateful that opera houses saw fit to use her in bel canto roles that today are cast with singers a few sizes down from her voice. The sound is fair to good.
