Pros:

  • Of the legendary operatic duos, Birgit Nilsson and Wolfgang Windgassen as Tristan and Isolde, respectively, are perhaps at the top of the list. They both possessed voices of effortless power and stamina coupled with a lyricism you rarely hear from Wagnerians.
  • Jerome Hines mesmerizes in the role of King Marke.

Cons:

  • The sound is slightly muffled and not at the standard of many of the broadcasts that survive from Bayreuth during the 1950s.
  • The first few minutes of King Marke's monologues are missing, as well as the beginning of the Act III prelude and a minute from Tristan's Act III monologue "Und drauf Isolde".
