Pros:

  • In the same year that Wolfgang Sawallisch recorded an entire Ring Cycle for Rai della Roma, he also recorded Rossini's Mosè with the company. An interesting pairing to be sure, but Sawallisch clearly has something to say about this neglected work and delivers a very good argument for the piece.
  • His efforts are buttressed by an excellent cast led by Nicolai Ghiaurov in the title role. Ghiaurov's imposing bass is appropriately biblical in scale, but he also manages some exquisitely refined singing.
  • My only regret about Teresa Zylis-Gara's Anaide is that the part is too short and a bit of a waste for her colossal talent. That said, her opening aria is a marvel of bel canto singing, particularly from a singer whose voice was much more dramatic than what you often hear in Rossini.
  • As Sinaide, Shirley Verrett makes much of her big scene and, like Zylis-Gara, leaves you wanting more.

Cons:

  • None to mention.
