Don Giovanni
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756–1791)
DESCRIPTION
Ruggero Raimondi’s dark, resonant bass proves an ideal successor to Cesare Siepi in the role of Don Giovanni. While both singers radiate a magnetic sensuality, Raimondi adds a measured undercurrent of menace, sharpening the opera’s intrinsic moral ambiguity. The casting of the female roles is no less inspired. Margaret Price offers a purity of tone supported by seemingly inexhaustible reserves of breath; her delivery of “Abbastanza per me, mi parla amore” in “Non mi dir” stands among the most exquisitely sung phrases one is likely to encounter. Kiri Te Kanawa, as Elvira, matches this distinction with a sumptuously rich timbre and an unfailing ease of production, lending the character a compelling blend of warmth and resolve.
